Why You?

FROM THE DESK OF Pastor Eric Nichols

By no means am I a statistician, but I feel it’s safe to say that 90-95% of people will spend the majority of their lives trying to figure out who they are or trying to develop into who they think they are. However, I’m certain that the same percentage of people have never considered “WHY they are.” Yes, “WHY they are!”

The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you learn why!

Why were you born? Besides the obvious—your parents had a romantic moment together and presto, you were born—there is more to your existence than that moment of passion. God created you for a reason, or should I say, He had a purpose in mind. Therefore, He provided an entire life for you to fulfill it.

Some people think you were created for destiny, when actually you were created for purpose. Not to minimize the importance of destiny; I want you to understand that there is a distinct difference.

Purpose is the explanation for your existence and the answer to the “WHY you are.” You are here to fulfill a human need, to be God’s answer to a human prayer, or to be His answer to a human question—if not all three.

Destiny is a sequence of events, circumstances, and experiences that God arranges to bring you to the place where He can “use you the most.”

However, to focus on your purpose (your WHY?), let me suggest that destiny is the distance you must travel to get to your purpose. Therefore, if you are created for purpose, that means, regardless of your gender, you were born pregnant. You are carrying an assignment specifically for you! That’s the uniqueness of purpose. More than one person can be created to fulfill a purpose, but not with the same purpose as you.

For example, if you have a room full of thirsty people, one person may bring the cups, another may fill them with water, while another will serve them to those who are thirsty. Purpose is being where you are needed and doing what is needed.

That’s how you discover the answer to “WHY am I here?” Your purpose identifies the need, which also carries a burden or duty with it. Your purpose may not seem like much to you, but a glass of water to a thirsty person can be life-saving! Just you being in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing is fulfilling purpose.

My advice is to ask God to show you where you’re needed and where you’re assigned to meet that need. Here’s a hint: He’s already directing you. It usually starts with a burden. In other words, the need seems to bother you while no one else seems to notice it at all. This is because it’s specific to you; it’s YOUR purpose, and that’s your “WHY you are!”

So get on it, because someone needs you to bring the water and fulfill your purpose in order for them to survive.
